Black Adam #6 Review

BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE #6 (OF 6)
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy

To start, a small correction from my previews of this book. DC listed it as 6 of 8 for some reason, causing a state of confusion and euphoria in me as I thought the best mini-series in years was being extended a couple more issues. Alas, it was never meant to be and the fact this series is over is the only flaw in an otherwise masterpiece.

Quick recap for those foolish enough to not pick this title up. Adam needs am amulet to allow Faust to ressurect his dead wife, Isis, whom he failed to revive once already. Adam has part of the amulet and just needs the last part to finish it. He's being pursued by the JLA and a covert agency with magic Rock of Eternity 'god killer' bullets. Last issue ended with Adam finding a platoon of god killer mercenaries waiting for him at the final amulet piece.

This issue begins with Black Adam, literally, tearing through the entire squad of mercenaries. The narrative during this is equisite, with Adam stating how he will paint this planet red if he has to to save Isis as he turns the arctic landscape into a bloodbath. The massacre ends with Teth walking over the ice as one of the men bangs on it from below before falling to his icy death.

However, one of the men lives, barely, and raises his gun and tags Adam with a bullet, much to his surprise, as reinforcements in helicopters fire on him. He escapes into the arctic waters with his completed pendant, but not before placing the bullet in a passing seal's mouth. As the tracer bullet rises, the mercs, JSA and JLA are waiting to strike as a seal sticks it's head out the hole in the ice.

With his pursuers thwarted, Adam makes his way back to Isis in human form so as to not waste anymore of her magic essence, which is temporarily giving him his Black Adam powers in lieu of his magic word.

However, as Adam enters the hometown of the Marvel family, he decides to take a pit stop. As he walks along the streets, he quietly spouts shop names and what have you in hopes of guessing his new word. He eventually stops at a small shop for food. Seeing the waiter preparing a child a Chocolate Egg Cream (it's a milkshake like drink), which has neither eggs nor cream in it, he decides to order one himself. As he orders, down comes the lightning. Yes, his magic word is Chocolate Egg Cream and he is now fully Black Adam again. The word, as childish as it sounds, makes perfect sense for that same reason - Billy Batson is a child and thinks like one.

Powers restored, Adam returns to Faust to revive Isis. It fails, as many expected, and before Teth can kill Faust, he points out he wasted too much of her essence and she's dead because of him. The scene is really well done and Adam is ever the tragic foil as he flies off screaming at his own failure.

However, Faust is a bastard of the highest order and replaced Isis' bones with those of Ralph Dibney, which is why it failed. Returning to the basement of the tower, he proceeds to revive the real Isis, who is apparently under his control, and uses her to open a doorway out of the tower, freeing him of his prison. The series ends with Adam making his way to the Khandaq Embessy, where he laments the loss of his wife and his complete failure, unawares of Faust's trechery.

To say this series wasn't epic on every level would be an outright lie. Many mini-series start strong and fizzle out or are constantly at the cusp of greatness, but never quite make it and many more are just plain bad. Black Adam delivered in every single issue and this final capped off one hell of a joy ride through the whirlwind that is Black Adam's tragic life. There are even hints of a possible sequel, as Adam didn't really stop that organization that chased him and we all know there will be hell to pay for Faust when Black Adam finds out about Isis. Hopefully this will be picked up upon after Final Crisis.

Verdict - Must Read. There's going to be a gaping hole in my monthly purchases and heart where Black Adam used to be. If you didn't follow this, I implore you to pick up the trade.

Black Adam #5 Review

BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE #5 (of 6)
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy

This was the first time I've been let down by an issue of Black Adam. It wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't as insanely good as the previous issues either. However, I understand why this issue had to be like this. Tomasi had to move certain players into position and have Adam get the missing pieces of Isis' amulet which, in turn, made this mostly a set up issue.

Despite the slow pace of this issue, I still very much enjoyed it. I really liked the exchange between Atom Smasher and Adam. It was a nice throwback to the JSA days. I'm still not sure who is behind the UN forces chasing Adam or if they are just random governments ordering his capture.

Verdict - Check It.

Black Adam #4 Review

BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE #4 (OF 6)
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy

DC, please, please, please give Tomasi and Mahnke an ongoing Black Adam series. In a week with books like World War Hulk, All-Star Superman and Nova, just to name a few, Black Adam still manages to easily be the best book this week and probably the best book since the last issue of this stellar book.

It's really hard to keep doing reviews for Black Adam. It's just hard coming up with positive things to say about this book every month and I've yet to find a single flaw in any issue. Writing about perfect books is harder than it sounds when there's nothing to juxtapose against every single good thing in this book. Tomasi breaks the mold with this series and it appears he doesn't subscribe to the current "decompression" trend other books employ. This book doesn't waste a single frame and it is all beautifully detailed by Mahnke.

In fact, every issue is full of non-stop "OH SH--!" moments and the plot continues at a break neck speed and this issue is no exception. Whether it's the eerie opening hallucination featuring several heroes and loved ones chopping up the unconcious Adam's body or Adam's various whole sale slaughters of his would-be assailants and pursuers to the saving of the people that helped treat his wounds, this issue just doesn't give you a moment to catch your breath and, hard as it is to say, somehow manages to improve on the previous issues.

Verdict - Must Read. Seriously, if you aren't reading Black Adam, what the hell's wrong with you? I can't think of a single reason for you not to be reading this book. This isn't a random fanboy musing or "oh this is my favourite character" speil. This is fact. Read this book. Go now. The rest of the reviews will be here when you get back.

Black Adam #3 Review

BLACK ADAM #3 (of 6)
Written by Peter J. Tomasi

This book just keeps getting better and better. The fight with Hawkman, as depicted on the cover, is brutal and deadly and quite easily one of the best moments of the week for me.

As seen last issue, Faust has given Teth Adam the ability to transform back into Black Adam again. However, it requires channeling the last remaining powers of Isis, which are contained in her bones. The more he uses the power, the quicker it drains her body of the energies which are required to revive her. This becomes important later on. For now, Faust gives him a marking on his hand that will show him the way to Isis' amulet, which is all Faust needs to help Adam bring Isis back to life. This brings us to the main event - the battle with Hawkman.

Hawkman has been given a piece of the amulet for safe keeping. Adam tries to convince him to just let him go about his business of reviving Isis, but Hawkman cannot overlook the genocide Adam has committed after her death and proceeds to fight him. While Adam tries to simply leave, so as to not use up the energies of Isis his transformation requires, Hawkman will not let him leave and strikes him from behind as he is fleeing. Adam seeks to end it quickly and proceeds to beat down Hawkman over the span of 3 or 4 pages in a brutal fight that ends with Adam tearing the wings from Hawkman's back and letting him fall several 100 metres to the ground below, smashing into a car in a bloodied heap.

Learning from this encounter, Adam decides to forgo the use of his powers from now on unless absolutely necessary. However, while in human form as Teth Adam, he is shot multiple times by the mysterious group that Batman and Superman were investigating last issue with that sniper outside the Khandaq embassy. Talia al Ghul was present in this issue and alerted to the use of a Lazarus Pit, which was Black Adam's doing earlier in the series, and makes me think the League of Assassins might be behind this attack on Teth.

This mini-series continues to impress and is cementing Black Adam as one of my favourite characters. I'm kind of upset that he goes through all this and it's been revealed he gives Mary Marvel his powers in Countdown at the end of this journey. However, this does not detract from this book nearly as much as I thought it was going to. Originally, when he was revealed in Countdown and the ending to this series was spoiled, I wrote this book off prematurely. I'm glad I stuck with it as this is easily one of the best books coming out of DC at the moment.

Verdict - Must Read

Black Adam #1 Review

BLACK ADAM #1
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke

Too little, too late. That is all I can say about this new Black Adam mini-series. This book should have launched right after 52 or, at the very least, before it was revealed what his magic word was changed to and that he got his powers back in the pages of Countdown. Despite this, I still gave this book a shot and I was glad I did.

While not the best book of the week, this was still quite enjoyable. I have to admit, ever since he tore the guy in half in the early weeks of 52, I have been a huge fan of Black Adam. His portrayal in 52 lead me to read more of his back story and I was quite happy to hear he was not being thrown to the way side at the end of 52 when this series was announced.

We start this issue off by finding out that Adam has been hiding out with several loyal followers from Khandaq for the last while. With no access to plastic surgery, Adam takes drastic measures to change his appearance and has his followers literally beat his face in. Once he is suitably bruised and swollen, he and his followers set out to recover his dead wife's remains so that he can resurrect her in a Lazarus Pit, of Ra's al Ghul fame. After recovering her remains by sneaking into police state Khandaq, Adam's followers sacrifice themselves so that he may escape with her unimpeded. We end the issue with a dip in the Pit and the return of Isis. Whether this is permanent or something more menacing is left to next issue.

I was truly surprised this issue was not rated for mature readers or that it did not come with some kind of warning. This issue contains, but is not limited to, multiple visible deaths, cannibalism, murder, torture and more. Pretty graphic and violent stuff for a comic book not marked for mature readers. However, it fit what I would expect from a Black Adam book given his current state of mind and I thought it was an excellent issue. I recommend this to anyone that enjoyed 52, JSA or has any interest in post-52 Black Adam.

Verdict - Must Read
