War of Kings Primer

War of Kings began earlier this month, much to my delight, and I wanted to do something that would help get those sitting on the sidelines caught up and, hopefully, inspire them to start take the plunge and start picking up this cosmic event.

As such, Matt and I have put together a primer, of sorts, to all things War of Kings related, which we will be posting over the next few days. This introduction post will answer some basic questions in regards to what the event is about, what you need to know and will serve as a general Q&A and index for the primer.

More after the jump.

What is War of Kings?

War of Kings is the current cosmic-based event taking place in the Marvel Universe and its related cosmic titles, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy. Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, the architects and men responsible for the current renaissance taking place in Marvel's cosmic universe, the six issue miniseries kicked off last month with a bang. You can read my review of War of Kings #1 here or read the issue online for free at Marvel's website.

What is War of Kings about?

War. More specifically, a war between the Shi'ar Empire, led by Vulcan, of X-Men fame, and the Kree, who were recently taken over by Black Bolt and the Inhumans. Caught in the middle of this epic struggle are various cosmic mainstays, such as the Starjammers, who were seeking refugee from Vulcan and the Shi'ar with the Kree, and the recently reformed Nova Corps, who, as cosmic peacekeepers, will attempt to put an end to the war.

How many books are involved in the crossover?

The main story and only one you really need to follow is the self-titled, War of Kings. Other tie-ins include: War of Kings: Ascension, Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova.

Is there a checklist?

Yes, there is. You can view it below. However, it does not include anything prior to April. The only essential titles missing from that would be Secret Invasion: War of Kings, which acts as a prologue to the series, and War of Kings #1.

I've never read any of Marvel's cosmic titles, have no clue who Vulcan is, how he took over the Shi'ar Empire and know nothing about who or what an Inhuman is. Where can I find out more about them?

Over the course of this week, Matt and Kirk will be publishing a series of posts covering the basics of everything related to this event, from Inhuman to Shi'ar to the very beginnings of the the cosmic resurgence - Annihilation - and everything in between as well as character profiles and other important information related to the War fo Kings event and these cosmic characters.

Listed below are the three posts we will be doing, what they will cover and the date we will be publishing them.
